Hello, my name is Jack Panzica and I would like to thank the FinnShark membership for allowing me to join this forum. Groovyjay, has introduced my to your forum and I hope my posts and upcoming trip will be of interest to you.

With your permission , I would like to tell a little story.

About 50 years ago, there was a US TV program call " Route 66 " It was about two young men " Buzz & Todd " who owned a C1 corvette and traveled along the historic Route 66 from Chicago , Illinois, to Los Angles California.

They would find all kinds of adventure, saving ladies in distress, putting criminal in jail, and just having a great time in a Corvette

As a 12 year old boy, I fell in love with the life they led and more important, the car they drove, a 1961 Corvette

After graduation from University and getting my first teaching position, at 22 years of age in 1969 , I bought a 1961 Corvette for $900

It caught fire in 1970 and I bought a 1966 L-79 327/350 Roadster. 42 years and 300,000 miles later , I still have that car and I still have a passion for driving it.

If you like, I would like to share some of my experiences with the car over the years and with great excitement, the possibility that I will bring my car to Finland this summer.

Groovyjay, has been following my travels on the US CorvetteForum and I have enjoyed his posts on his car and on Finland and its people. It seems that you are just as crazy and passionate about your corvettes as Americans.

I have many "How to fix " posts that I can re post for those who need to fix both C1 C2 and C3 Corvette. I will post them if you like.

Here is a link that you can view on my 48 State Trip. You do not have to join to read....it has about 65 pages and 81,000 views.

Here is the post on my European Trip

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c1-and-c2-corvettes/2992659-the-car-is-packed-and-europe-awaits.html

I hope to ship the car to Norway the first week in August, make my way north to North Cape, south to Oulu, & Helsinki, on to Sweden on to Denmark and then central Europe and the leave Netherlands first week of October.

I look forward to meeting the people behind the screen names......that is the most fun.....

Please ask any questions that you may have

It seems that you won't make it to our Corvette Meet in Jämsä, Central Finland on the 10th to 12th August. Pity, there should be even over 100 Corvettes...

Anyway, if you are planning on driving from Oulu to Helsinki, Jyväskylä lies almost at the middle of those two and you're most welcome. Just tell, if you need a place to stay overnight. We have a quite active band of Corvette enthusiast here and I'm sure that we can arrange at least some fun for you...

Hello and welcome.

That kind of trip sounds unbelievable, but super great  If you managed to drove 48 states you'll manage to drive Europe. Gotta read that topic about 48 states some day.

I live on the coast of Maine in a small town called Cape Elizabeth. It is about 5 miles from Portland Maine, the major city . Maine is very much like Scandinavia, rugged coast line , tall pine trees and a long winter.

This winter has been mild. Here are a few pictures of Maine

Hello Paavo,

I am very excited about my trip to Europe. I am really looking forward to my trip in Scandinavia. My welcome by your members has been overwhelming and makes my feel very comfortable with my trip to your wonderful country.

I have been warned not to accept an invitation to a drinking contest in Finland. It has been said that I will have no chance against the Finns.

One Norwegian told me he is still "under the table" from the last time he tried. Needed lots of Aspirin the next day when he woke up.

See you soon

Hi,

I have started up my Blog: http://jackpanzica.blogspot.com/

I will write more personal information in the blog. Not tech information ,but more personal interactions with Europeans and my thoughts as I travel.

You can also make comments on the blog and become a follower.

I will try to keep it more up to date this time. I was so tired at the end of the day on the 48 state trip, the blog suffered. Hope to do better this year.

Hello,
Here are pictures of my car unpacked and packed for my 20,000 mile trip. I was on the road for 90 days with my tent and the hospitality of hundreds of Corvette Enthusiasts.
It looks very neat and tidy, but once I was on the road, it was as messy as a kids room after play time.
I did not take a spare tire, I used the space to pack my tent and sleeping bag and stove.

Insurance for driving my C2 in Europe

Hi, I have found out that my insurance company does not cover me in Europe for driving my car .

I have European companies that cover any Europeans I may crash into (they into me) but will not cover my car for damages or theft.

Please direct me to a European Company to cover my needs for the 2 months that I will be in Europe.

Thanks

Nice to hear that you got the insurance arranged. I checked and you can get a liability (liikennevakuutus) from the customs office at the border for the time in Finland. But that would only be for Finland and only liability.

Hi Jack,

If You want to see the eldest city in Finland, please head to Turku, the former capital of Finland! It's about 1,5 hour drive from Helsinki. I mean if You're into castles and medival things.

http://www.turkutouring.fi/en/turku_en

And if You're a hockey fan, You just might see Saku Koivu from the Mighty Ducks in the town...

Unfortunately I can't accommodade You, but I can make the arrangements for You, if You decide to come here.

Like in Helsinki, there are two different ferries leaving to Sweden twice a day. Two in the morning and two in the evening. And it's cheaper to travel from Turku than from Helsinki.

And Jack, a dinner and a few beers on me! :D

On the my 48 state trip the distance was 19,238 miles (30,946k and SebringBill was the closest with 31,390K) ...

Who can guess the Europe trip distance ? The map below is a projected route, not the actual. Who knows where I will go once I get there. But I will follow the general directions of this map.

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msa=0&msid=217525988141263560502.0004b9f967fc7dde64532&ie=UTF8&ll=57.421294,11.25&spn=38.990385,130.78125&t=h&z=3&vpsrc=1

The winner gets a weekend stay at the ocean in Cape Elizabeth.

It's about 6500- 7000 km. But won't you visit on Italian Alps?? For example Lago di Garda or Venice?? And you are so close you must drive trough also Top Gear's one of the best driving roads from Davos to Stelvio.. Hope you don't afraid highs ;)

Also must see place is Grossglockner in Austria, you can drive by your car to 2800 meter high..

And one more close of your route.. River Mosel in Germany. From Koblenz to Trier. Bernkastel Kues are middle of that route and is very beautiful small vine village.. of course Nürburgring is not far of it.. ;)

..Bad English.. yes I know.. :D

Jack if you are driving Sodankylä - Rovaniemi - Kemi - Oulu I recommend to you to drive from Rovaniemi east side of Kemijoki (route 926). It is very nice road from Roveniemi to Tervola. Then over the river to the west side and drive that very boring E75 158km to my place.

Corvette brothers from Rovaniemi recomended that route for me.

If I remember correctly there are some really nice driving roads (while since I was there) up the Norwegian coast.

But back to Finland...I'm not sure about Oulu-Jyväskylä, but on route Jyväskylä-Jämsä-Tampere you can use nice side roads and likely be joined by some local Corvette's. Also from Tampere to Helsinki we can take some older routes to enjoy.

Hello and Good Spring to All,

I have been looking at several TV productions on Car Travel, Classic Cars and other Car type shows. This show would be shown in US and Europe if made.

Many of you have asked about doing a show on my adventures....

What would you like to see a show that would feature my travels in Europe. The people I meet and host me, car collections and historic places would be shown.

I would travel basically alone and would have to survive on a limited budget as I had in the US tour. Remote cameras in car and one camera man following for distant shots and interviews .

Please list the things that would make you come back and watch week after week. All suggestions are welcome.

What kind of interaction do you want to see?

Your feedback will help me create a show that we all will be proud of. After all the show is about you and your love of these wonderful machines that we give life to........

Hi,

This is all projected but here goes.

Aug 2-5 Oslo getting car off boat, visits etc
Aug 5-6 western Norway
Aug 6-9 heading to Trondheim
Aug 9-11 heading to North Pole Zip corvettes has on back order a new device so I can drive on water

Aug 11 13 heading South Finland for reindeer boots and Helsinki

Aug 13 -15 recovering from Vodka headache and Sweden

Does that sound right.......I really do not know how fast or far I can drive from Oslo to Helsinki. It is about 2,000 miles , I hope to avoid a lot of slow tourists....so help on back roads ? Are there any back roads, or is there only one road

I will begin to plot the route next month....busy now getting my life in order so I can be gone for 2-3 months

I can't wait......very excited.....working hard on the video part.....

Thanks for the concern.......so many things to get in order

You must either speed up or slow down your speed,I´ll be in VetteMeeting in Himos during 10-12.8,If you want your Laplandboots,I can take them with me to Meeting and we`ll meet there or I´ll come back up north at sunday 12.8 ,and I´ll meet you somewhere during the ride to Rovaniemi.I think that You dont have to use back roads.Traffic is pretty slow anywhere in finland(compared to US),so I think that you´ll have no problems with traffic.

Hello All,

I hope spring is on the way. I belong to the US forum NCRS and a fellow named John owns a 1962 Corvette. He posted this to me:

Jack, enjoy your adventures. Not everybody has a chance to do what you are doing.

If you have a chance while in Finland, try to get in touch with the owner of the white 62 that was exported to Finland.

It is car #00015. Since mine is #00029 I would like to get in touch with the owner of #15 to compare notes.

Thanks in advance.

If you know of this 1962 Corvette. # 00015 please let me know and I will past the information to John in USA

Hello to all,

Plans for my trip are coming along. I have included the UK in my trip. I will take a ferry across the English channel from France , drive and meet fellow Corvette owners in UK, and put the car on a boat for the US from the western coast of England.

It should be exciting to drive on the left side of the road, really exciting

How is the weather ? I have been looking at the web cam from Nordkapp and have not seen the sun yet....much clouds.....

In August, what will the weather be like on my road south to Finland.....

Should I really make sure my weatherstrip works to keep the rain out.

I have installed a third latch on my 66....it has stopped all the leaks from the bow in the middle of the windshield...I thought of it before my 48 state trip.....I put up with water for 40 years before..

Here are some pictures of how it did it. If you have a c1 or c2 it works great. GM put in a third latch starting in 1968

Jack,

Weather should be fairly nice in August. Depends a lot on the wind. If it's from the east we'll get really nice and warm weather from Russia (along with who know what). And it's it's from the west there are usually some rain coming from the Atlantic over Norway and Sweden.

Might be some thunder, but generally ok. And if you are here during the Corvette meeting (as it seems) we have order in for nice weather in any case,

This weekend should be nice and good weather for convertible cruising.

Jack,

One good place to check the Nordic weather is

Just type the name of the place and you'll get the forecast for NeXT few days.

Temperatures in celcius.

Hello ,

I hope everyone is enjoying the summer....

I have an update on arrival dates in Scandinavia

As many of you know, in order for me to come to Europe and make a documentary film, I would have to raise additional funds to pay for the project. The final costs involved in shipping the car, insurance, petrol, documents, fees, equipment, maintenance and living...are more than anticipated.

I am using a fund raising program called Kickstarter, run by Amazon.com (they keep track of all records) you submit a topic for your film project and if committee approves the film project, you can try to get people to promise to back the project...if the total goal is reached , all pledges are collected, if not, no pledge is charged, you can read about it on my website WWW.CorvetteVagabond.com

Update arrival date change....I have 30 days to reach the funding goal . The fund raising goes until the 15th of July,

I can not ship the car by boat before the 13th...of July.....unless the goals are reached....the car will go the Germany first because that is the fastest way to get my car to Europe by August 3 ,.....which will give me time to drive like crazy to get to Scandinavia by the 5th

So with the help of the Corvette Gods, I should be putting on sun glasses and enjoying the midnight sun....in Finland soon, I may miss some of the activities in Norway, but if I am a week late, it should not effect my travels to Finland....I may have to miss the Hot August Nights...and Nordkapp...
Oulu here I come....

No matter what happens.....You and all forum members have made me feel as if I had known you for a long time.....Thanks

Jack

Paul Harrington, threw a party for me on the first day of my 48 state trip. He asked me to come to Cape Cod again for a send off party for the European trip,

Here are some pictures of the event on Sat and Sunday.

I would like to thank Paul Harrington and the many corvette friends and members of the New England Corvette Club for send off party for the European trip.

Paul had set up a little party on the first day of my 48 state trip....to my surprise , more than 20 corvettes and their owners greeted my at Paul's home on Cape Cod....

This year Paul invited me down to do a pre trip tune up and inspections of my car before taking it to Europe.....I got there on Friday and we changed the plugs, oil, filter and check all fluids....Paul has a great garage and a few very nice cars.....and a lift...

Unfortunately.....as I got off the highway and slowed down a bit...I began to hear a bad sound from the rear and drive train....

We spent the day trying to track it down....we did find that my trailing arm shims had popped out on my right side.....we found some extras and replaced the missing ones....but the clanking and clinking continued...

I drove the car home and had no problem at high speeds, no noise or clanking....but at low speeds clinking came back....I will try to get the car to my mechanic to find the problem......hate to have a wheel fall off or some other drive train part break on the road

We did a mock judging of my car NCRS style....no I am not going to tell you how many points I had deducted.....But my engine now has decals.....I remember the original ones from 42 years ago......long gone, but now......just like new.......it says my engine has 350 HP...so it must be true..

Here are a few pictures and and link to all of them on Photobucket....about 15 to 20 members showed up with some very fast late models....

Dear Forum Members,

I will have some news on the trip by the end of the week. It looks like I will make it to Europe by the end of August.

I am sorry for the delay, as I had hoped to make it to Scandinavia earlier in the month, but the trip was more costly then first anticipated and I needed the extra time to raise additional funds.

Thanks to all who have supported my efforts and I hope to see you soon

I have just confirmed the sailing date. August 7 or 8th. The car will go to Boston on July 30th, a few days for customs and packing it in a container. The MS C Emma will arrive in Bremerhaven, Germany on the 27th. I should clear customs and be on the road by August 29.

From Germany I will head to Denmark, first, then on to Oslo, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, France, Netherlands, Belgium and back to Germany for departure sometime at the end of October.

The trip should cover about 7 to 8 thousand miles. I will be in the US until August 26th, land in Germany, stay with German forum member, pick up car and head north.

I think that is enough planning for today

Lots of work to do before Monday when I drop the car off in Boston.

Again thanks to all who have supported this effort and the many new owners of old and new corvettes that I will stay with in Europe.

Saksasta aion suunnata Tanskaan, ensin sieltä Oslo, Norja, Suomi, Ruotsi, Tanska, Saksa, Sveitsi, Italia, Ranska, Alankomaat, Belgia ja takaisin Saksaan lähtöä joskus oli lokakuun lopussa.

Matka kattaa noin 7-8 tuhatta mailia. Tulen olemaan Yhdysvalloissa ennen 26. elokuuta, maa Saksassa pysyä saksalaisen foorumin jäsen, poimia auto ja mene pohjoiseen.

Mielestäni on tarpeeksi suunnittelee tänään

Paljon töitä ennen maanantaita, kun jättää auton Bostonissa.

Hi Mika and others,

Mika has given me a route... that takes me to Trondheim, but it may be too long....I may extend my 5 days to 6 or 7, since I can visit Germany on the way south and back again north as I head to Bremerhaven to leave around Oct. 25.

I am trying to spend more time visiting people then driving......

I like the route, but what if I drove north through Denmark and took the ferry on the northern tip of Denmark, so I did not cover the same route through Denmark....but came to Copenhagen on my way back to Germany?

I may have to cut Trondheim out of the loop. Is there any way to get to Oulu without going all the way north around the Gulf of Bothnia ?

Is there a ferry across Gulf of Bothnia at the narrow point near Vaasa ?

I want to thank all of the members of the forum for their offers of help and friendship...

Because I am on many forums in Europe and USA, I am finding it hard to track messages ( PM ) and posts that have names and addresses and requests for me to stop by or attend events.

To help me keep all offers of lodging and visits in one place, I ask you use this email address for all private messages. No matter where I am , I will be able to access this e-mail, with you name and address and any dates.

It is very hard to keep track of all the stops and requests once I start to drive.....and if I loose my computer...all will not be lost....
Here is the e-mail address for private messages and offers of help.

I will be posting most days and I am very excited about meeting all of you.

You can still use the forum PM , but this one email address will help me not forget anyone..

I recommend that you should drive along Swedish east coast (Kalmar - Landskrona) when travelling from Stockholm to Malmö. The road is much more versatile and scenic. Your current route is like a "quickly through Sweden at max. speed". It's quick to drive but less enjoyable I think.

Good Evening to All,

The car is in the container, waiting to be put on aboard the MSC EMMA on August 9th. Here is a link to a picture of it.

My posts over the next few days will contain information on the following subjects:

Car preparation
Insurance
Shipping/ Air Travel
Travel permits
Routes
Gas / Oil Needs
Legal Passport Travel Permits
Forum Member Locations Car Locations
Mechanical Support Abroad
Family and Financial Support

As you can see, there are many factors that must be addressed in order for this trip to take place.

Lets start with Car Preparation. I am second owner 42 + years.

1966 L-79 327/350 All items replaced or rebuilt for 48 state trip 2010 and European trip 2012. Most installation work done by me except for engine work, steering box, ball joints/bushings and paint job 2010.

Original Engine .060 , new pistons 9.2 cr miles two years old
Over 300,000 miles, original crank, rods (40,000) miles on rebuild since 2010

All wheel bearings checked and in good condition
New stock shocks, bushings , new u-joints all shafts.

New DeWitt radiator , original steering box rebuilt , tie rods ends and sleeves replaced and new lower ball joints

Oil change and filter, transmission and rear end fluids checked...new plugs r45s, Stealth one wire TI, distributor rebuilt, new shaft, bushings.

New tires 215 R70 whitewalls, seats rebuilt and recovered and new soft top and weatherstrip.

I drive the car every day and feel I have a very reliable car.

I will not have a spare tire as I need the room for tents and supplies, I carry a small amount of tools that would allow me to fix most minor problems that may come up. I may have to add some emergency equipment, once I get the car through customs depending on German inspectors....

I believe that I can get any parts that I may need from local vendors or other Corvette owners who are hosting me.

Most of my restoration was done using Zip Corvette Supply. Good service and choice of repo or replacement for parts....Most vendors carry the same parts....it is service that is the most important and I have never had a problem with getting a return or money refunded.

My next post with be on shipping and paper work needed to take your car to Europe

I will be happy to answer any questions on car prep....that you may have....

Hello,

Sorry to have missed your Corvette meet. You are still on my route....

First I have to get my car back from Germany customs....and be on the road by August 30th.

See all soon

Hello to all,

I am trying to have Norway as the landing point for my car instead of Bremerhaven, Germany...since I am late in starting my trip and all of you have been so welcoming to me....I want to start my trip in Norway as planned.

This will give me, I hope more time to spend here in Scandinavia, and I will not have to drive over the same country (Denmark) twice.

I will keep you posted....the boat and car are in NYC and I should have time to make the change....

Good Afternoon to All

Plans for Finland. My car arrives in Oslo on the 5th of September. I am about a month late for my plans.. I must shorten my stays in all countries as I still have to leave Europe by the 25th of October.

I must get from Oslo to Cap de Agde in France by the 21st of September. That distance is about 4,000 miles in 14 days.

Here is a map of my direction of travel

https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msa=0&msid=217525988141263560502.0004c790698d118784848&ie=UTF8&t=m&z=4&vpsrc=1

It is about 1000 miles from Oslo to Oulu. I will leave Oslo on the 6th if no delays in customs or boat arrival.

It is 700 miles from Trondheim to Oulu. I will need to stop for night somewhere in between as I don't want to drive 14 or more hours

So I need a stop ( anybody live between those cities?) or I will camp with my tent if needed.

Once I get to Oulu around the 9th of September. Members who had wanted me to visit or could provide a place for me to stay, look at my map and maybe plan with others who live in the general region to meet me at a central place near Oulo. From Oulu I will head south to Helsinki .

I will have a phone number (local cell) for all to call or you can send emails to me at jackpanzica@gmail.com or jack@corvettevagabond.com

Please email or post now so we can plan if you had wanted me to visit ,

I will need Finshark members help to make this happen. All who had asked to me to visit please let me know again...as it is hard to find all the emails and PMs , since I am on so many different forums..

So FinnSharks, I am on the way.....please again let me know you name and address and contact information , so I can make a new map with the locations on it. We can then look at it and figure a good way for me to travel and meet you in the short period of time I have.

Ok folks, here is the latest news on trip schedules.

The car/container arrives in Bremerhaven , Germany on the 30th or so of September. Container is transferred to a tramp steamer, that takes it to Oslo, Norway by the 5th of September.

I will ship the car back from Norway the week of October 22-27

I wonder around the docks until I find the right place, unload car from container, show documents to Customs (no duty or taxes in Norway if you do not stay more than 1 year ) .

I fly into Oslo on the 3rd of September, it is about a 13 -15 hour flight from Portland ME / Newark / Oslo . Leave at 12:45 pm on Sunday and arrive at 10 am , Monday in Oslo.

Spend two days in and around Oslo waiting for car to arrive.

On the road I hope by the 6th heading north to Trondheim, Norway, then Finland via Sweden via Rovaniemi, on my way to Oulu, by the 8th ?

Members of the Corvette Club of Norway and AMCAR will be helping me get the car and attend little gatherings of car owners.

After that I have to watch out for bears, deer and moose on the roads, not very many people, just like Maine...

I will post some costs and details later....right now I am working on becoming a Cinematographic expert....should be fun....lots of pictures and 90 second videos coming your way...

Wait , Wait, just checked, the boat is in the North Sea , just west of Denmark , heading to Bremerhaven.

The MSC EMMA is in range when you look at the Location Map. Just type MSC EMMA in vessel box

http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/#

It is due in 27th of August. aboard MSC EMMA

Then by coastal cargo ship to Oslo on the 3rd, arriving on the 5th of September.

I should be driving in 10 or 11 days....

Things seem to be under control in Norway. Adams Express, Mr.TL Clark is the agent who will handle my container, unloading and ready it and me for customs .

On to more fun things. Just before the car was put boat, my vac can diaphragm failed (B26) can. I had a spare VC B1 that I put on that works find , but is not the one for the set up of my timing.

I am bringing with me a B26 VC and want to replace it as soon as possible. I had sent with my car , a timing light and all tools needed to do this and most minor repair work.

Can anyone help me with a place to work on my car. It will be fun to do, as I have been without my car for a month, and I am starting to shake with car withdrawal.

My journey is about experiencing the "The Passionate Corvette Culture" in Europe as I had done in America

The question ! Is it the same ? Is it the same But different...?

I have had a passionate affair with Corvettes and in particular, my car for over 42 years. I love to drive my car....and to meet people though out the world that have one thing in common

a Corvette...........the year does not matter...but it does make for meeting a different group within the larger corvette community.

That is why I have always tried to stay with owners if not camping... I am much more interested in the people, their lives, hopes , dreams...

Are they the same as mine...just different....?

hi Jack - you can stay with my family & me for the days between your arrival & the car. I live 20 minutes from Gardermoen & 45 min drive from oslo city center. Unfortunately i can't take days of work to show you around or meet & greet at gardermoen, but i'll see if i can get you out at gardermoen (nothing promised tho) . I'm more into old english cars than corvette's but have a full workshop at my place so sorting out the car shouldn't be too much of a problem. For interesting things in Oslo you could borrow one of my old english cars or i can sort you out with public transport - whatever you fancy. On the 3rd i'm pretty much preoccupied until the afternoon, but will meet you in oslo wherever you choose. I'll PM you my contactdetails - would like to have your flight# for planning. Lets take it from there....

My reply

Hello, life is good now that I know I will have a roof over my head....funny you should have English cars...my roommates when I was younger in NYC had English sports cars. A MG B 1968 Gold and a 1961 3000 Austin Heally....silver.. and in high school, my friend had a 59 TR 3 ? Green I think. That would be great....to see Oslo in an English car owned by a Norwegian with a Corvette....what a great way to start a trip.

Ok since we have taken care of the night stuff.....

I come in on United Airlines Flight #38 from Newark , New Jersey.....it leaves US at 8 pm on Sunday 02/09/12 and lands at 9:50 am Monday 03/09/12 .

If someone would like to volunteer being a cameraman or sound man, director, or gaffer....or know of some students of Cinematography , who would like their clips shown all over the world, I could use your help showing Oslo on video

I need a ride from the airport to Jan-Ivar,s office to drop off my bags. From there we could go an see Oslo....and shoot local areas of interest, people, parks and historic buildings. I am not new to driving , but this trip will be more video, less photography....I know many Corvette owners in the US want to see you, your cars, your culture...

We have a few days to work it out

I am very excited

Hi, Good news and bad news....The fellow corvette owners in Norway have taken care of my arrival and I am comfortable tonight.

I was taken to the shipping agent today to check on the car and was told that my ship with my car on it will not be in until the 12th of September.

I am in a bit of a shock as my schedule was already pretty tight. Jet lag has done it job and I need some sleep but wanted to let you know of my situation.

Tomorrow is another day and I will decide how to proceed

Sad to hear that there is such a delay. 8 days plus maybe few more to get the car out.

One thing to check (while waiting)...check that the Norwegian customs shall not want a deposit for the Value Added Tax on the value of your car (if they do tell them that it's an old car with no value what so ever.)

Last year when I have some sample products with me from Sweden to Norway I had to pay a large deposit fr the goods.

Likely not the case with your car, but good to check.

Hope to see you soon.

Jack,

One solution would be that you travel Norway for the next few days while waiting for the car. Visit Trondheim and see the cost (take the train, rent or borrow a car etc.)

Then when the car arrives you could take more direct route towards Oulu.

If you meet a gentmen called Finn Ström in Oslo say hi from me. He has a blue/blue -69 big block convertible (and some other nice cars).

Hello to all my Finnish and Swedish friends....

As you all know I am way behind schedule, I have had to make some very difficult decisions. I can not come to Europe without coming to Finland and Sweden.

Here is how I propose to do it....

I do not have time to drive to Finland this month. Here is a map of my route returning from France. I have 35 days to travel from the south of France to Oslo where I will return to the US.

Schedule:

Copenhagen Oct 19
Stockholm Oct 20
Helsinki Oct 22
Tempere / Jyvaskyla Oct 23
Oulu Oct 24
Sundsvall Sweden Oct 26
Oslo Norway Oct 27

Plane to US Oct 29

Here is a map of my return to Scandinavia from the south of France

I hope you understand my change of plans....the car coming in on the 12th of September has made my trip a very difficult one to execute.

please pray to the gods that the weather will hold up and I will not need spikes and chains for my corvette.

Keep the light on and the fires warm......

Since my car is not due into Olso till the 12th, I thought I would visit members of the Corvette Club of Norway. I took a train from Olso to Bergen, a city on the west coast of Norway. It is the land of fjords.

Bergen is about 350 miles away and you have to go over many mountains to get there. I thought you would like to see the terrain on the way...

I wonder if I should have left on my snow tires.....

Nice.

We don't have the oil and fishing money the Norwegians do so we have to drive with the old C1-C3 generations...so you are likely to see some of those when you get here.

More from Jack , as some of you may know I have taken my c-2 to Europe as the guest of European Corvette owners. Most have C3 to C6 cars. If you follow this post:

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c1-and-c2-corvettes/2992659-the-car-is-packed-and-europe-awaits-24.html (no need to join)

You will see some wonderful cars. The Europeans are buying up these cars at a great pace, they like speed and blowers.

Harry Harbakk has a great car 1980 with some unusual art work.

I had the opportunity to visit an area in Berlin that has the last remains of the Berlin Wall. The pictures show the Memorial Sites that depict the events of that time 1961 to 1989. Many Germans lost their lives in the attempt to flee East Germany at that time.

Here are some pictures of the Beach Fun Fest held by the Corvette Gang of France. I was the guest of honor at the event held in the south of France at Marseillan Plage, Marseillan France. More then 120 Corvettes were present for the 3 day event. Thousands of people viewed the cars every day.

I have told American Corvette Forum members to not believe TV. The love of Americans and all things American by Europeans is almost overwhelming. They are more proud of our country, its people and its spirit then the news stations would lead you to believe.

I had left the activities in the south of France and was heading north towards Bordeaux , not knowing where I was to stay that night.

Tired , I stopped at a rest stop and had my head in my hands wondering where to go next, when someone tapped me on the back.

Startled, I turned around to find Alain and his lovely wife Christine standing behind me. I had met them a few days before and we talked about meeting again one day. Seeing the condition I was in they invited me to come home with them as they lived on the way to Bordeaux.

It was just fate that I should meet them and to my surprise , I learned that Alain was the owner of a French NASCAR team, with two cars, #17 & 18. NASCAR has been expanding its racing program in Europe and as luck would have it, I had a chance to interview Alain and to see his cars at NoGaro race track, 3rd largest track in France .

Here are some pictures of Alain at home and at the track. I have been invited by Alain to a NASCAR race at Le Mans in October and to watch his cars in the race. I spent two great days with Alain and his family .

Family including his mom in my car.

I am off to Versailles to play tourist. However here are some pictures from the Island D' Oleron on the west coast of France near La Rochelle. I stayed with Alec and his lovely wife Michele.

I was a bit emotional after Normandy beaches and thought it best to stop driving for the day. Wonderful old city with a rich French history.

Posts later tonight.

I was guest of honor at a Corvette Club of France Rallye in Brittany last weekend. More than 50 Corvettes and over 100 people enjoyed a wonderful weekend along the Brittany coast. We started in Erguy and visited a few castles and old cities . Cap Frehel light house, Fort la Latte and Dinard et Saint-Malo and the old city of Lanvallay.

I will make two posts as there are many pictures

I was fortunate to be invited to spend the weekend by my host Alexander Van De Rostyne in Knokke Heist. It is a resort town on the northern coast of Belgium. The Zoute Rally 2012 was being held there . It is a rally that cost about $4,000 to enter your car. Many cars entered had values over $1,000,000 including many Bugatti's, Bentley's , RR, etc.

Here are some pictures on the way and at the event.

Last time I posted , I has hearing strange sounds from the car rear end. We kept checking it in Paris and Netherlands. NCRS chapter members helped me out a bit and I have many pictures of Netherlands and Belgium for later.

They directed my to Andre Boer.
http://www.autobedrijfandreboer.nl/

Then it happened.

I was in a black hole in Germany. No internet in a small village. The natives treated my well , but I could not communicate until now. I escaped the "I do not know the password" host and now am comfortable, they gave me food and water.

The noise was a u-joint and I spent the day with Andre Boer, he and his sons fixed my car and I had a chance to get a personal tour by Andre of his cars "Dutch Corvette Collection" and businesses. Dinner with his wife, three sons, daughter in law and two grandchildren. I had a big home cooked meal. Very nice man and family.

He sent me on my way to Arno, a wild German , who came running out of his house at 11pm when I arrived, screaming about some political program he was watching, because I was late. It took a few minuets to get him to calm down and tell me his name. Good man once his blood pressure came down.

Unfortunately , no internet. But had a great time with the Germans who gathered the next day for their regional corvette meeting, radio interviews and good fellowship.

So I am OK now, in another small town near Bielefeld. Will head to Hamburg later today.

Lots of pictures and stories to tell.

Jack

PS I am heading your way soon. I hope to be in Sweden by the 16th or 17th of Oct. Then on to Helsinki from Stockholm around the 18 or 19th of October. I have to be back to Oslo by the 24th or 25th of Oct. So we must figure a way for me to see the most people in Finland and at locations a little south because of weather.

Let me know who and how over the next few days.

Amazing trip Jack! I'm flying to Finland on 19th (will be in Helsinki 20th), post your detail schedule here, it would be great to see you live!

You should be good with the weather in Finland at that time, especially in southern parts.

I have the internet for a few hours and though I would catch up on posting pictures. I am in small town outside of Hamburg Germany.

As you may remember, I had noticed a rear wheel noise a few weeks ago.
The car was put on a lift in Paris and no damage was found, but the noise was still there. On to the Netherlands and an invite to a NCRS.NL chapter barn find show at Rob Muskquetier's workshop just north of Amsterdam in Akersloot.

I got to meet many Dutch corvette owners and we also put my car on a lift and checked again for the rear wheel noise.

Here are some pictures of the countryside from Amsterdam to Akersloot.

We did not find a direct reason for noise yet. More to come later.

I'll be on holiday Wednesday to Sunday and planning to meet you either in Helsinki or if you'll make it to Tampere area. Bed and breakfast also available if needed.

We'll have to get you by a lake/see and heat up a sauna and have few beers. Weather should not be too cold and we still have some Corvettes that are not stored for the winter.

Have you guys in Helsinki planned something joined already?

Hello to all,

I would like to plan my visit to Finland and need your help so I can see and visit as many Corvette lovers as possible.

Here is a plan I have in mind your advice is welcome

Oct 20 I try to get from Stockholm to Turku. or directly to Helsinki. I want to take the ferry . What do you think , which city if possible

I want to go to Helsinki, Tampere and possible further north. Weather permitting.

I must be on the road to Oslo so I can drop car off in Oslo by the 25th of October.

I have offers of places to stay but would like to have you all look at the best way for me to cover the long distances in a logical way.

I have 4 days to meet as many Finns as possible. Can someone on this forum look at the map, and help coordinate some gathering or parties that I can attend and will give me a chance to meet many of the screen names in person.

Thanks for your help

Jack

I would say that taking the ferry over night would be the best choise. You would be moving along whole sleeping. Either Turku or Helsinki shall be ok. Or one one way and other on the way back if not northern route.

Next weekend should be ok even up to Oulu or Tornio level (with the current info).

I'll make few calls in the morning and we'll do some planning and suggestion to you tomorrow.

Would leaving Stockholm on the 19th in the evening be the most likely option?

You'll need one full day to drive from Stockholm to Oslo. So morning of the 24th in Stockholm (or Umeå) the latest.

There is a man named Andre Boer. He lives in Wezep , Netherlands. Some people say he has one of the most extensive collections of Corvettes in the world.

He is also one of the nicest. My car's rear has been acting up since Paris, maybe before. We checked it in Paris, in Amsterdam, in Breda, and Jack Jansen's repair facility, his corvette's later, we noticed problems with u-joint on the haft-shaft. Jack did not have any , but said he would call Andre Boer, a friend and Andre also fixes corvettes.

I set off for Andre's place and what I found , I would like to share.

Andre welcomed me, from under a car he was working on. Came over and told me that I had heard of my trip and that I was having a problem with my car.

He asked his son Johan to look at my car when he could, Martyn, his other son was also working on cars. A third son, Michel was studying finance.

He asked if I had time to look a car or two while work was being done on my car. I said "sure"

What I found was a man with a passion for Corvettes. A passion that has lead to having almost 100 great cars and 100 spare cars to keep the first 100 happy.

He was kind enough to show me every car and how he works on them for his collection and also as place where late model Corvettes and Mercedes can be bought .

Later in the day my car was fixed, new rear outer half shaft joint, peace of mind and to top it all, a home cooked meal.

I had dinner with Andre, wife Hinnie, three sons, daughter inlaw and two grandchildren. I felt very at home.

Here are pictures. I will post 12 more in next post. The link to his collections is

Suggestion for Finland:

Saturday:
-Arrival to Turku evening of the 20th. (Jack please confirm the name of the boatline so se'll know where to wait for you)
-Drive to Tampere (2 hours plus maybe a stop on the way)
-Over night at our house

Sunday:
-Visit to Rally Hall of Fame in Kangasala with local Corvette guys
-Cafe at Vehoniemi car museum
-Some sight and garage seeing and maybe lunch at American diner (or a Finnish restaurant as Jack has likely seen american style restaurants).
-Drive to Jämsä (Plan to rend out a cabin at Himos so guys can gather for a nice evening and stay ever night if needed) About 2 hour drive on some side roads.
-Evening and night at Jämsä

Monday:
-Drive to Helsinki along some side roads. FinnVette in Janakkala prepared to assist if something needs fixing. 3-4 hour trip with some stops on the way.
-Most of the day and evening in Helsinki area with the local Corvette guys.
-Evening and night at Pappatunturi's or GJ's place?

Tuesday:
-A day in Helsinki and in the evening a boat over night to Stockholm.

By this plan you see the Finnish archipelago (on the boat on way to Finland), Central Finland with a lot of Lakes, Helsinki, some rally inheritage and a lot of local Corvette people.

I can join from Turku to Tampere, Vetteman likely also and at least from Tampere to Jämsä, On Monday I can meet you on the way to Helsinki and there during the day.

Jack please let us know what you think and we'll start getting people together.

As said, my whole plan is a pure suggestion on what I think might work as timetable and route. It's a suggestion that would cover a lot of Corvette people in Southern Finland and even a bit of Central Finland.

For Sunday lunch I mentioned American diner, but also noted that it's likely nothing special for Jack and something Finnish might be more suitable. For Jämsä/Himos-area Vetteman was looking into have some moose dishes as the moose hunting season is well on it's way.

My suggestion is that we can come up with more suggestions on route, places and timetable, but would be nice to do that fast so that we can gather as many Vettes and people to meet Jack as possible.

I agree, I come to Turku at 7pm Stena Line. The plan you suggested works great and will take a lot of stress off me.

I look forward to seeing as many as possible...so lead the way. I just got to my cabin and online. I am off to eat...and think about Stockholm next.

Yhtenä ajatuksena oli sunnuntaina cruisaa letkassa joku tallikierros pks-alueella,
(esim. pappis, Tuomas, GJ,vet65, corvette63 ym.)

Sunnuntai on täält ainakin GO-GO

Cruisinki porvooseen ja jalkautuminen vanhan kaupungin puolelle olis kans must!

Toi on hyvä idea !!!

Laittakaa sitten kunnon raportit vaikka sinne kerhon internettisivuille,

Sitten sunnuntaina hyvissä ajoin tallikierrokselle Tuplakoon linjoilla laajalla Corvette-edustuksella. Olisiko illanistujaispaikasta ajatuksia, ehdotuksia? Ja paljonko porukkaa olisi tulossa?

Maanantaina Jack vois sitten ajella maisemareittiä Tampereelle.

Jack,

Sorry for all the Finnish text in your thread. We are just thinking of the best route and plan for you for your short stay in Finland.

You can be sure that there is Corvettes waiting when you drive of the boat in Turku and we'll have a nice plan together for you. Now it's mainly about where to start and what to take next. We'll llikely have the plan finalized by the weekend.

I am trying to come in one day
Sooner. To give more time Finland. Friday instead of Saturday will that help. If ferry space is available

That would likely make a huge difference...and make sure you would have a great weekend in Finland. Please let us know as soon as you know and we'll make sure you'll get most out of your stay here.

I had to cancel the non-refund ticket for Sat.

The only boat was to Helsinki and I took it. I leave Stockholm on Wed night 5 PM (17:00) and get to Helsinki at 10 am Thursday morning.

So you have me early, but I can find my way around for a while if all are working or busy. As long as someone finds me by the end of the day .

I know it will be fun even if the weather is a bit damp...spirits will be high

Great news Jack,
I dont have anything to do at Thursday morning, so I can meet you there if needed.
I also have a room for a night at Loviisa about 60 miles east from Helsinki, if you need one.
